Staying Safe Around Zebra Mussels: What You Need to Know

ree

Zebra mussels have recently been confirmed in Westler Lake. While tiny, these invasive freshwater mollusks pose a real risk to both the health of our lake and the safety of those who enjoy it. Known for their razor-sharp shells, zebra mussels can easily cut bare feet, hands, or legs, especially around docks, rocky areas, and shallow waters.

Here are some safety tips every lakegoer should know:

1. Always Wear Water Shoes

Zebra mussels attach to rocks, docks, ladders, and other hard surfaces. Whether you’re wading, swimming, or launching a kayak, protective water shoes can help prevent cuts.

2. Avoid Walking Barefoot Near Shoreline Rocks

The shoreline may look safe, but mussels often cluster just beneath the surface. If you’re entering the water from shore, check the area first—or better yet, use a dock or launch area.

3. Check Your Equipment

Before and after use, inspect and rinse boats, paddleboards, fishing gear, and ladders. Zebra mussels spread easily by hitching a ride, so regular cleaning helps reduce further contamination.

4. Don’t Touch with Bare Hands

If you find a cluster of zebra mussels, avoid grabbing them barehanded. Use gloves or a tool to remove debris safely.

5. Don't Dispose of Mussels in the Lake

If you remove zebra mussels from a surface, do not toss them back into the water. Bag and dispose of them in the trash to avoid further spread.

Zebra mussels are more than a nuisance—they're a safety concern and a threat to our lake’s ecosystem. Let’s work together to stay safe and protect Westler Lake for generations to come.
